Parents: Coming out of the furry closet.
So, for the better part of 2 years now I've been reading webcomics. I've been on forums for a few months. And I've been a furry for about a week. Thing is, this has all Ben done without my parents knowledge. I didn't tell them at first because of how I found Twokinds, (accidental rule 34 click) my first comic, and it just became my way of doing things. I'm starting to get tired of it, though. I really don't want to have to hide it anymore, and it wouldn't be good if they were to find out without my telling them first. Now I have a problem though. I'm a furry, and they will eventually see that when they star looking at the forums and webcomics, and I've no doubt they'll eventually find me here. However, I have no idea how to tell them, or what they're reaction will be. They're very tolerant, and my mom has said she would be ok if I was gay (I'm not,) but I don't know how they'll react to this. Especially consideringy mom's tendency to assume and read too much into things. (Hence her asking if I'm gay) Any tips on this?

Re: Parents: Coming out of the furry closet.
Well, this is what I plan to do with telling my parents:
Make your desktop background a furry picture (But for the love of god, make it something work-safe. Otherwise, there would be too many questions, and not of the right kind...). Make sure they can see it at some point. When they ask, explain.
Simple, clean, and you'll almost have to do it on the spot, which I find to be better than having something planned because, from my experience, planned speeches and whatnot tend to be complete cock-ups.

See, I don't worry about that, I don't try to hide it. Now, while I may not openly tell people I'm a furry, if they were to ask, I'd tell them. It's not something I see a point in hiding from others, honestly.

I'm that way around my friends, Lief. But my parents... well, they know I love sci-fi and fantasy, I guess that could be used to explain my fascination with furries.

{Yes the swear filter works. }
I never tell my parents anything anyway, so I never had to tell them. My parents are their own people, with their own problems. If they ask about the furry art, I'll tell them, but I don't see a point in making a huge deal out of it. I mean, is the furry fandom really THAT much worse than any other hobby or interest? It's kinda just something else to be into... some people like planes, some people like model railroading, some people like Star Trek, and then some people are into furries. It's the same sort of list really, just another interest. I'm also a video gamer, computer lover, music enthusiast, audiophile, and car lover... and I just tack furry on the huge list of things I'm into. Albeit, close if not at the top, but still it's just something to be into.
Personally I think the only reason you'd have problems explaining it is if your parents are avid CSI fans or if you only tell them about the porn parts. Otherwise it's just another fandom, this one being dedicated to any and all art or artists of anthropomorphic animals. Which isn't weird or awkward really. Unless you make it that way.
So my advice would be to be honest, act natural, and not make it out to be: "The Talk".

Thanks for the help, everyone. I'll just stop deleting my history and such from now on, and if they ask, I'll take y'alls advice and explain it. I must ask though, why would being a CSI fan matter?Amazing Mr. X wrote:if your parents are avid CSI fans .

CSI did an episode that featured what they claimed to be *furries* which painted us all in a very bad light.

yes, it wasn't a good light, but CSI tends to skip over the real things and just wing it home, but hey, sometimes it's good.... on occasion.

Correction, the episode is more or less accurate. I mean not entirely for the context used... but lets face it, that sort of thing does go on.Nuff wrote:Prometheus wrote:Thanks for the help, everyone. As for coming out of the furry closet I wouldn't make a big deal out of it. I mean I haven't told my parents or anything, and there's no reason to. My mom has seen my doodles before, I wear a collar, and she's seen my backgrounds some of which she's commented on. So I wouldn't make it a big deal really, because it's not.

O.o I kinda did that, but either my parents didn't care or something, since the worst part of what I heard was my dad making a bad joke (cat anthro, barely work safe, take a guess. ) I gotta say this for them, they are not by any means the type of parents most of you seem to have.

Coming out of the furry closet? XP
Hell, I found furry through some NSFW stuff I'll admit (Spending months by yourself, bedridden with naught but an iPod can be boring ) but I never really saw it as anything to hide. The fandom is a big part of my lifestyle, and just something I never really tried to hide. I quite often wear ears of some kind, my GF will wear a collar or her ears and she draws me a lot of nice furry art which I put up around my room.
Hell, I actually convinced my family to get into it too My younger brothers an arctic/timber wolf cross and my sisters a bunny too ^^
I think people get too worked up over the fandom, then get all dramatic whn they try to "come out" about it, and THAT'S what gets their parents worried; again, see the Furcast radio show on their site or iTunes store
(Also, Knothole is quite a funny furry podcast.)

Yeah, I know now. I was new to being a furry, and I'm also quite paranoid when it comes to parents. I don't say anything, but I don't hide it either.

If you do feel like explaining it though, I always thought The BBC ( http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/8355287.stm ) did a rather nice coverage of us ^^
I dunno about you guys, but here in Ireland furs are starting to get a lot more publicity, pretty good stuff at that. =3
